The Majestic One

“The magnitude and majesty of God” isn’t a likely topic for our daily devotions. It usually takes something significantly impressive—a moment in awe of nature or a special life event—for us to take a step back and take it all in. In his book, “The Holiness of God” R. C. Sproul writes, “Men are never duly touched and impressed with a conviction of their insignificance, until they have contrasted themselves with the majesty of God.”

Throughout Scripture, there is mention of nature declaring the glory of God. In addition to His creation—which can be enjoyed by everyone—the Lord gives each of us special moments unique to our own experiences that proclaim His majesty just as well. Here are some of those things on my “Awe List”:

  • Driving Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park at elevations more than 11,000 feet and being blown away by the beauty of the mountains on display
  • Watching a pod of a dozen dolphins, including two infants, swimming free in the waterways off the Florida panhandle
  • Driving up the Catskill Mountains near Oneonta, New York, reaching a break in the clouds, and seeing fields full of vibrant wild flowers
  • Looking out onto the vastness of Lake Michigan from the top of Sleeping Bear Dunes
  • Observing the beauty of the trees and shrubs covered by a layer of new fallen snow
  • Peering into the depths of Lake Baikal near Irkutsk, Siberia, one of the deepest and clearest lakes in the world
  •  Looking into the eyes of a new born child, especially a grandchild, within minutes of his or her birth

These are spectacular, but there is also great beauty, grandeur, and majesty all around us if we take the time to notice. How often do you and I stop and express our gratitude to God? David writes in Psalm 8:3-4, “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?”

It’s not about me, it’s about God. But I am so thankful today that He cares about and loves me. May my life more and more bring glory to Him, the majestic one!

What are some things in your life that remind you of the majesty of God? How can you take time today to reflect on His glory?
